Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals ran across the track right in his path

The alarming incident happened on the third lap when safety workers were observed on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to swap his damaged front wing

Competitor's Live Reaction

Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"

"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I approached Turn One and there were just two individuals running across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We fail to grasp how on a ongoing race track marshals can be authorized to just run across the track like that. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"

Governing Body Reviewing

The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is actively examining the events

"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the regulatory authority

"In the third rotation, track officials were informed and made ready to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send personnel were rescinded and a safety warning flag was displayed in that area"

"The examination is ongoing what happened after that point"
